Abstract
In diesem Beitrag soll ein Einblick in Kenias Sozial- und Gesundheitswesen gegeben werden, ausgehend von einem anfänglichen Überblick über die Entwicklungen, die in diesem ostafrikanischen Staat in den letzten 55 Jahren stattgefunden haben. Vom Kolonialstaat nahezu ohne Bildungs- und Gesundheitssystem wurde Kenia zu einem Staat, welcher demokratisch, föderalistisch, wohlfahrtsstaatlich, innovationsorientiert und entwicklungsorientiert agiert. Die NGO-Landschaft ist jedenfalls geprägt von privaten Stiftungen/Projekten, Projekten der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZA) sowie internationalen Unterstützungsfonds (UN, WHO etc.), wobei es staatliche Bewilligungs- und Regulierungsprozesse für die NGO-Arbeit im Land gibt.
Für die Recherche führte ich Interviews mit Dr.in Busra Ahmed, einer Ärztin am Kilifi County Hospital, sowie mit Clinton Ngonyo, der viele Sozial- und Gesundheitsprojekte in Lamu County mitinitiiert und durchgeführt hat.

This article aims to give an insight into Kenya's social and health care, with an initial overview of the developments that have taken place in this East African state over the past 55 years. From a colonial state with almost no education and health system, Kenya became an innovation- and development-oriented democratic welfare state. The NGO landscape is shaped by private foundations/projects, development cooperation projects and international support funds (UN, WHO etc.), with state approval and regulation processes for international NGO work in the country.
For the research, I conducted interviews with Dr. Busra Ahmed, a doctor at Kilifi County Hospital, and Clinton Ngonyo, who co-initiated and runs social and health projects at Lamu island.
