Eine kritische Perspektive auf das Konzept Radical Help

Abstract

Im Zentrum dieses Essays steht die kritisch-reflexive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konzept Radical Help von Hillary Cottam. Von einer Kritik am britischen Wohlfahrtsstaat ausgehend, entwickelt sie Prinzipien für moderne Sozialsysteme, die insbesondere auf menschlichen Beziehungen aufbauen. Das Konzept ist für die Soziale Arbeit insofern interessant, als diese Prinzipien als Ansätze zur Bearbeitung von sozialen Problemlagen aufgegriffen werden können. Aus diesem Grund lohnt es sich, Radical Help einer näheren Betrachtung zu unterziehen. Im ersten Schritt werden die zentralen Aspekte des Konzepts skizziert und anschließend mit der Frage konfrontiert, inwiefern dieses dazu beitragen kann, Soziale Arbeit weiterzuentwickeln. Dabei wird herausgearbeitet, dass das Konzept zwar durchaus emanzipatorische Elemente enthält, es jedoch potenziell problematisch sein kann, sollte sich die Verantwortung für soziale Problemlagen in Richtung der Klient*innen verschieben.

This article offers a critical-reflective analysis of the concept of Radical Help by Hillary Cottam. Based on her criticism of the British welfare state she develops principles for modern social systems which are especially based on human relationships. The concept is interesting for social work insofar these principles could be interpreted as approaches to face social problems. In the first step, the central aspects of the concept are outlined. Afterward, it will be confronted with the question if the concept can contribute something to the development of social work. Therefore, the assumption is stated, that the concept may have emancipatory elements but that the potential shift of responsibility for social problems towards the clients must be seen as highly problematic.
