Abstract

As a result of the expansion of the drug help system and the associated improvement in care and treatment conditions, particularly through harm reduction measures, the living conditions and chances of survival of ageing drug users are increasingly improving. However, this is accompanied by a growing number of drug users in need of help, who are no longer able to care for themselves for health reasons. Therefore, the question of appropriate care for this clientele arises.

The following article presents the results of a study on addiction in old age, which considers current scientific research as well as the need-based further development of various help systems. By means of a multi-stage survey procedure, the need for care was evaluated both from the perspective of the defined target group and on the basis of multiprofessional expertise. Based on the results, the article presents a concept for a support service in long-term care for older drug users.

This research was awarded in 2021 by the Windhag Scholarship Foundation of the Province of Lower Austria and the Erika Stubenvoll Scholarship of Volkshilfe Wien.
