Abstract
The question of the extent to which the climate crisis, with its attendant ecological and social impacts, affects the profession of social work has been a topic of international discourse for some time. The keywords ‘climate justice’, ‘sustainable social work’ or ‘green social work’ are now also the subject of discussion in German-speaking countries. This article examines on both theoretical and empirical grounds, the extent to which social work organizations, in particular those engaged in poverty reduction, can contribute to create a more sustainable society. Furthermore, it analyzes how they can support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through the application of innovative, sustainability-oriented methods and concepts. The article identifies potential avenues for advancement, while also examining the challenges and future development opportunities.
